MARITIME MOSAIC UNION-CASTLE LINERS • Ships of the famous Union-Castle Line, established in 1900 with the merger of the Union Line and Castle Mail Packet Company, linked the UK and South Africa. The Line operated passenger, cargo and mail services, and its lavender-hulled ships, celebrated on the postcards reproduced here, were iconic symbols of their era. However, the rise of air travel, increasing fuel costs and the advent of container shipping led to its eventual decline.
