PLAN YOUR TRIP TO THE KRUGER PARK
GOOD TO KNOW
WHAT DO THE CODES MEAN?
HELP! WHERE DO I START? • Planning a holiday in the Kruger can be overwhelming. It’s bigger than some countries! You have to decide what’s important to you. Here are the best camps for the following categories:
ECO ZONES • The vegetation you travel through will often determine what kind of animals you’ll see. These are the main eco zones in the park.
Antics in Eden • Whether you’re a beginner with a point-and-shoot camera, or a professional with a zoom lens, there’s no such thing as a laid-back holiday in the Kruger. There’s simply too much to photograph!
First lady of the veld • In 2001, when she was 21 years old, Karien Desmet became the youngest person and first woman to ever be appointed as a section ranger in the Kruger Park.
Horn of duty • Cathy Dreyer has one of the toughest jobs in nature conservation: head ranger of the Kruger National Park. And one of her toughest assignments is keeping the park’s rhinos safe from poachers.
From the fence line to the frontline • Tinyiko Golele grew up in a village next to the Kruger and went on to break two glass ceilings: She was the first black woman in the park’s history to be appointed as a section ranger and then as a regional ranger. This is her story.
Every bird counts • So, you’ve been to every nook and cranny of the Kruger, from the deserted Nhlanguleni picnic site to Crooks’ Corner? You know everything there is to know, but do you know about Makuleke?
The story of Makuleke • Long before big game hunters, transport riders, traders and fortune seekers ventured into the modern Pafuri area, it was inhabited by Tsonga-and Venda-speaking people.
Everyone's favourite park • You’ll have to search far and wide to find someone who doesn’t like the Kruger. In fact, most people don’t just like the park, they love it! We spoke to holidaymakers who come back year after year after year.
HOW TO SECURE YOUR KRUGER BOOKING • It takes determination and planning to get a booking for a group of people during the winter school holidays. The Van Staden family consists of six adults and four children. Here’s how Karin does it:
Cruise through the Kruger • A visit to the Kruger Park involves spending a lot of time in your vehicle. If that vehicle happens to be a Ford Everest Sport, the park feels like an ocean – and you’re sailing along without a splash.

How to find Shingwedzi's leopards • Rian Boshoff, a financial advisor from Middelburg in Mpumalanga, has been to the Kruger Park more than a hundred times. His favourite rest camp is Shingwedzi, because that’s where he can spend time with his favourite animal, the leopard.
