In the spirit of Nina LaCour and Adam Silvera, this offbeat and romantic debut novel follows a teen girl whose desire to find out more about her late rock star father brings her closer to the last person she expected.
Everything Koda Rose knows about her father she's learned from other people. Moving to New York City with her mom won't change that, even if New York was Mack Grady's city—where he became famous, where he wrote his music, and also where he died.

Koda has more important things on her mind. Like how she's in love with her best friend, Lindsay, and doesn't have the courage to tell her. Agonizing over how to confess her feelings leads Koda to explore Mack's enigmatic history in search of answers. She tracks down her dad's band mate and ex-girlfriend, Sadie Pasquale, and finds herself becoming rapidly obsessed with the mercurial musician.

As Koda and Sadie's complicated bond deepens, they are both forced to grapple with the black hole Mack left behind, or get sucked in themselves.

As the daughter of a rock and roll musician father who died by suicide when she was a baby, Koda Rose has plenty to compare herself to. She flew mostly under the radar in L.A, but now that she’s nearly 18 and moving with her former-model mother to Manhattan—her father’s old stomping grounds—the tabloids are paying more attention. Koda knows much more about whales than about her father’s music, and spends most of her time wishing she could tell her best friend in L.A. that she’s in love with her. Then Koda runs into Sadie, her father’s reclusive old girlfriend and bandmate, and they strike up a friendship that reveals more about Koda’s dad and distances the teen from her mother. Nissley’s debut puts a naïve teenager into situations she doesn’t fully comprehend—though youthful-seeming Koda’s surprising naivete in the face of Sadie’s sex-drugs-and-rock-and-roll charisma can feel frustrating, her introspective struggle with her secret-filled white family’s legacy makes for an offbeat read. Ages 14–up.

Koda Rose is about to turn 18 and has just moved to Manhattan, where she is confronted with scrutiny for being the only child of her famous rock-star father, who died when she was a newborn. Mack Grady was the lead singer for Quixote, a rock band that still has ardent fans years after his suicide. Koda grew used to some of the attention paid to her but mostly lived a life of relative normality in Los Angeles with her mother. All that changes when they move to the Upper East Side and students at her new school see her only as Mack's daughter and are uninterested in getting to know the real Koda. In addition to wrestling with her identity, curiosity about her father, and romantic feelings for a girl named Lindsay, her best friend back home, Koda becomes obsessed with finding Sadie, Quixote's guitarist and Mack's ex-girlfriend. Once she connects with her, Koda's worship of Sadie and their unhealthy interactions threaten all her other relationships. While the premise is intriguing, weak character development limits reader engagement: Koda's navet rings false for a wealthy girl from Los Angeles, and her workaholic mother with disordered eating feels two-dimensional. Most major characters are White; Lindsay is Dominican, and a former band member who plays a supporting role in the story is Black. A potentially interesting exploration of identity in relation to parental fame let down by light characterization. (Fiction. 14-18)

Gr 9 Up-Koda Rose is a teen trying to find where she belongs and what brings her joy. Her father was a rock legend before he died, confident, creative, and impulsive-all the things that she feels she is not. When Koda and her mother move from L.A. to New York, Koda has a lot to deal with from her past and present all at once: leaving behind a best friend who she wished were more, starting over at a new school, and coming face to face with ghosts from her father's past. The story of Koda Rose reads authentic and clear. Fans of realistic coming-of-age stories will relate to the everyday trials of life Koda faces. Koda is not afraid to question her sexuality, rules at home and at school, and media norms in general, and teens will connect to her mindset. Multiple layers and side plots will keep them engaged. VERDICT A well-written coming-of-age story, this will suit readers who enjoy contemporary fiction with a hint of mystery.-Elizabeth Pelayo, St. Charles East H.S., IL
