DESIGN

Ethereal drift • From cloudscapes to cosmic forces, New Zealand designer Richard Clarkson continues to redefine atmospheric lighting.

Oddthing • Industrial designer Henry Caird's premise is straightforward: when he can't find what he's looking for, he makes it. It's an ethos that has proved particularly successful, with Oddthing's growing collection of unique objects quickly becoming cult favourites.

Objects of affection • Indice Studio has opened its doors in Grey Lynn, bringing Driade — and now FontanaArte — to Auckland's design landscape.

Material allure • Using natural stone as a starting point, this kitchen design evolved organically in an intricate interplay of tonal pairings and layered textures, echoing each other in playful formations.

Silent intensity • An object of pure geometry in a vast mountainscape, this Otago home rejects distinctions between interior and exterior spaces. Rather, Keshaw McArthur designed it as a vehicle for living within the natural context.

Molten forms, liquid light • There are moments when colour infiltrates the very being of a place. At this year's Dulux Colour Awards, two projects — on opposite sides of the Tasman, and with vastly different intentions — proved the potency of a well-chosen hue.

Craft & clarity • Kate Rogan and Eva Nash's long-standing partnership has forged a distinctive and assured voice within New Zealand's contemporary architectural narrative. Known for their thoughtful and collaborative approach, their studio's work is finely attuned to client and place.

Better building • Homestar offers a modern approach to home building — designed for the future, environmentally conscious, and economically smart. We spoke with its founders, the New Zealand Green Building Council, about how the programme has developed since its launch 15 years ago, and where to from here.

White light

Vivid expression • A bold interiors movement finds its footing — and its grounding — in considered and playful material choices.

Palettes of place • Sometimes, landscapes are too layered to describe in words. For artist Andrea Bolima a place is less a fixed location than a mood — a feeling. Born in the Philippines, raised in New Zealand and now based in Melbourne, Andrea's paintings inhabit a liminal space between abstraction and landscape — a form of colour-mapping led by emotion, not geography.

Ethical connection • From a childhood spent watching her grandmother quilt, Olivia Moon's fascination with textiles began early. Growing up in Wellington, she was drawn to texture and the tactile world, collecting fabrics and curiosities as a young explorer of material beauty. That curiosity set in motion a journey that would span continents and crafts.

Enduring beauty • The Modi Design space in Christchurch is a multifaceted environment — part studio, part showroom — designed to spark creativity and subtly present possibilities to visitors.

Rhythm & greens • Nostalgia is not a place to live, said celebrated Urdu poet, Gulzar, and he could be right. However, here, on a patch of land sandwiched between a golf course and a beach that is consistently ranked among the best in the world, is a house that resonates with a cherished history, while facing the future.

A moment of stillness • Tucked into a lush garden corner of this thoughtfully reimagined Christchurch villa, an outdoor bath sits like an art piece — ornate, sculptural, and serene.
